Gerber EAB Knife Recall
September 1, 2007
The
US Consumer Product Safety Commission in cooperation with Gerger, a division of
Fiskars, announced on August 29th a voluntary recall. One of Gerber's most
popular pocket knives, the EAB (Exchange-a-Blade), more specifically the model
numbers 22-41548, 22-41548CDIP, 22-01548W and 22-41548W, has a problem with
knife blade. According to a recent press release, "the back of the knife
can slide past the blade support, posing a laceration hazard". Eight
individuals had reported cutting themselves with these knives, several of whom
needed stitches.
This particular knife, sold from September 2006 through August 2007, had been
a large seller for Gerber, having sold 154,000 units through Walmart among the
many other retail outlets that carried this particular blade. This
particular pocket knife had the ability to use standard size utility razor
blades, which could be changed out as needed. The stainless steel handle
was often used as a money clip as well as a standard pocket clip. A small
nail hole aided in opening the blade. The Overall length was 5" and closed
length was 2.8" with a weight of 2.2oz.
Consumers are advised to stop using this pocket knife immediately and can
contact Gerber to find out how to receiver a replacement knife. Consumers
can call Gerber Legendary Blades at 877-204-5510 during regular business hours
or can go to their website at
www.gerbergear.com for more information.
